Physio Shoe Review Series: Hoka Cliftons 9s
One of the most common questions I get asked when treating patients is what is the best footwear and what shoes should I buy? Given how common this question is I thought I would review a few of the more common types of shoes and the shoes that are more commonly thought of as good for everyday use. The first review is on Hoka Clifton 9s. I must stress that I have no affiliation with any shoe brands and no predetermined preference.
As a general rule, there is no ‘best shoe’ just like there is no ‘best mattress’ or no ‘best exercise for back pain’ etc. Everything is individual and down to personal preference, body type, use and of course style! Everyday shoes should provide comfort, support, and durability to accommodate the demands of your daily life. In this review, I’ll delve into the HOKA Clifton 9 shoes, assessing their suitability for everyday wear from a physio’s perspective.
COMFORT: One of the best features of the HOKA Clifton 9 shoes is the cushioning. The shoes offer plush cushioning that absorbs impact forces during walking and provides a comfortable ride. For individuals spending prolonged periods on their feet, such as healthcare professionals or retail workers, the ample cushioning of the Clifton 9 can help reduce fatigue and alleviate pressure on the feet and joints. They did take a little time to wear-in in terms of stiffness and I am writing this review after 1 week and they are just starting to feel soft and bouncy.
SUPPORT: While the HOKA Clifton 9 prioritizes cushioning, it doesn’t compromise on support and stability. The midsole geometry of the shoe promotes a balanced foot strike and encourages a natural gait pattern. This can be beneficial for individuals with mild to moderate overpronation or those seeking a stable platform for daily activities. Additionally, the wide base of the shoe enhances stability, reducing the risk of ankle rolling or instability during walking.
VERSATILITY: Hoka Clifton 9 is a great everyday shoe but can also double as a good trainer shoe for those interested in busting out a few kms per week. It’s rare to have an everyday shoe double as a great running trainer but you can get the best of both worlds.
STYLE: In terms of style, Hoka is not the at the forefront of fashion. They are quite a bulky looking shoe and the high profile screams out “comfort shoe”. Now I know a physio shouldn’t be worried with style and only worried about foot health and biomechanics, but the reality is that looks will be a major driver in what people will be looking for in a shoe, and I just don’t think the Hoka Clifton 9 is very stylish.
In conclusion, the HOKA Clifton 9 shoes offer a great combination of comfort, support, and versatility for everyday wear. They would be a great option to look at if you have had a history of foot and ankle issues. When it comes to looks it’s not at the top of the pile though. Just give them a week or two to wear them in and they will feel softer and bouncier. If you have had a history of foot and ankle injuries, it’s important to seek personalised advice from a health professional before buying specific footwear.
