Physiotherapy

for injury, pain, illness or disability

What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a service that can help people with injury, pain, illness or disability. Physiotherapy will use any of the following techniques and quite often a combination of exercise rehabilitation, education, advice, manual therapy, dry needling, taping and much more. Physiotherapy can also help with injury prevention in either a sports context or in regular day to day life. A good physiotherapist will work with the individual to discuss their needs and goals and map out a plan to get them there as soon as possible. Traditionally, physiotherapy would be associated with a deep massage followed by a basic theraband exercise but it is much more than that these days with a wide variety of individual treatments and exercises that are tailored to suit the individual.

Assessment

On your first appointment we will go through a thorough history to make sure we have all the right information to help you. After the history, we go through a few physical assessments which might include range of motion, strength, palpation of the areas of concern, balance and look specifically any particular painful movements you have. The assessment is a crucial part of the physiotherapy session as this is where we deliver a diagnosis and formulate a plan together with the patient.

Treatment

From the assessment, we deliver any appropriate treatments that might be anything from exercise rehab to deep tissue massage to dry needling. Everything that we do will have a purpose. We might use some hands on techniques to reduce pain and help you to move a bit better so you can perform some movements more effectively. We might include some strength exercises to address any weaknesses that may be contributing to pain or loss of function. Sometimes treatment might involve advice, education and some self management strategies for the patient to work on at home. In most cases, treatment generally involves a bit of all these things and the right amount of each will be determined by the patient and the therapist together.

The Plan

To get the most out of physiotherapy there has to be a clear plan and our therapists will always deliver a tailored plan to get you to where you need to be. Sometimes this plan might only be a week if it’s something minor, sometimes the plan might be ongoing management to deal with chronic conditions. A good physiotherapy plan should include goals and milestones and is developed with the patient and not dictated to. Some plans might be a 6 week a return to sport program after an ankle sprain. Others might be a routine monthly check up to deal with a chronic lifelong condition. Sometimes a single session might be appropriate for a minor injury and a little piece of mind.
